A House of Cards

When planning to move, particularly when planning to move country, there is a lot of organisation and administration. Many, many jobs need to be undertaken, often in a particular order. It takes time and effort to bring the whole lot together.

The way we have tended to do it is to create one definite date and then build the move around it. With one definite in place, it is easier to know when things must be done by, what order they need to be done in and you can guage at what stage you should be at which time in the weeks coming up to the move.

For us, the move home is rapidly approaching. I will be flying back to the UK with the boys at the end of March and leaving them with my very brave mother whilst flying back to Bosnia in order to pack up the car and drive our wordly possessions back (if it doesn't fit in the car, it ain't coming). We booked the flights a while back and have since been building the elaborate administrative structures around that definite date to ensure that we get ourselves back. Vets have been booked to comply with the very stringent UK PETS scheme legislation for bringing animals into the country. Favours have been called in. People have rearranged their own schedules to accomodate us. Notice has been given on the house. Notice has been given our UK house. Places have been booked to stay.

And then the workers at BA announce that they will be on strike the day that we are booked. Our flight, from Belgrade, is one of those that will be affected. Our definite just became a hopefully, if you are lucky.

And down tumbles the house of cards.

PS - if you happen to see me, don't mention those poor misunderstood, underpaid, overworked BA staff. I might just spit venom and start shooting lasers from my eyes.

Oh man that really sucks. I can't believe BA!

BA have really burnt their bridges this time. A sure fire way to destroy their business - haven't they looked the the global economy recently!

But good luck for you and the family!!

Oh no! You poor things! These strikes make me so angry. good luck with it all, i hope the strikes are cancelled and you get back on schedule!

Wow! I didnt know you were coming home so soon!!

The strikes. I don't understand it. I know strikes are what the free world does when they feel an unfair deal is going on... but this is just crazy and it has an effect, sometimes devastating (missing special days, not seeing a loved one before they pass on, etc), to so many people in the world. Its not just about messing with people's holiday plans.

I really hope the strikes pass soon, and that all your juggled plans work out well.

And because you sound like you need something else to do... Ive tagged/awarded you with a Happiness Award--its actually because your blog makes me smile. Please dont feel you need to follow the instructions, its more about just sending on the acknowledgement x

Oh no I hope you find a way around it all. What a headache. When my moved back from France she forgot to do something or other with the dog and the vet so he's had to stay there for another 6 months! (the dog, not the vet). She picks him up next weekend. I have a friend who's BA cabin crew and many of them hate the strikes as much as the rest of us. Seems to be a few firebrands causing the trouble. Good luck with it all, it's come round so quickly.

That was meant to say my MUM moved back from France

BA realy do need to get a grip. How rubbish that you are on the end of the strike action when so much rides on it. I hope you manage to find a plan that gets round it! x

That's terrible! I'm sure BA could come up with something more constructive than ANOTHER strike.

Oh no you poor things. Fingers crossed that the new talks at least defer things until you've done travelling

My husband workd for BA for 11 yrs. I can give you the INSIDE story on those 'not poor, not underpaid, def not oveworked cabin crew'. it's the most union bound company in Britain.

Paradise Lost In Translation said...

p.s he wasn't cabin crew, or a pilot!

Gordon Brown would do his election prospects no harm if he could force a resolution to this problem....sorry, I know another bit of wishful thinking doesn't really help!

I know the feeling of helplessness, I hope things sort themselves out for you.

I am finding it harder and harder to understand BA and their workers TBH. I am the daugher of a union man and also the boys godfather was a union rep, but I just dont see a world where unions can hold companies to randsom exists anymore.

It is not acceptable, the world turns, times change, people are lucky to have jobs sometimes. Suck it up!

I hope for your sake that things are resolved before your flight or should that be fright!

So what will happen to your blog name when you move back home? I've been wondering....

I guess mummies always believe their kids will grow up to fly business class.

I really feel for you. When there's so much to do, it's a nightmare when you can't rely on something.

Hopefully they'll call it off at the last minute.

Oh, growling on your behalf! I have been let down by BA on several occasions and now avoid them wherever possible. It sounds as though it may be called off; let's hope so.

That is truly pants! We regularly flew BA in the past but wouldn't touch them with a barge-pole now!

Dot said...

Stink! Hope you get another flight soon and your plans aren't too disrupted.

I think those BA employees are really shooting themselves in the foot. No one in a right mind would book a BA flight after all this, and it happens all the time!

Looking forward to meeting you.

To everyone - thanks for your comments. To say that I'm infuriated with BA is an understatement. I used to think flying with BA was a real treat, something to look forward to. No longer. Fingers crossed they sort it out soon, I have no idea what we are going to do if they don't. x

Teacher Mommy - I'm wondering that too. Any ideas much appreciated. Current thought is Brits In Britain...

Aargh. Hadn't realised the return date was looming quite so soon. Hopefully it isn't too late for BA to sort things out; Brown keeps trying to get them to kiss and make up. Really hope so, for your sakes - grrrrrrrrrrrr. That was the sound of BA being forced to hire a private jet just for you and the boys.

With the threat of strikes, we chose to fly with KLM rather than BA. A less pleasant journey and timings, but now I'm very relieved, as our imminent holiday would be ruined by a lack of flight.

I feel for you, with the move and all the stress that involves. I hope you can sort an easy solution so that the return to the UK is as hassle-free as possible.

And, yes, the BA staff are probably shooting themselves in the foot, just like the PO workers last autumn.

Oh no, what a complete pain. Fingers crossed that it's OK. You should set yourself up as a moving country consultant, I'd pay you to sort out our house rental!

Harriet said...

Oh no!!! You have to get back here so that we can have that coffee for the ten minutes we're in the same city.

Will cross fingers that they see sense - or that someone lines them up against a wall...

Dorset Dispatches said...

Susie - it really does. But I'm starting to get excited, mainly about the thought of a Chinese meal!

A&U - It is really soon. But lets start a campaign...all chant after me now...private jet, private jet#

CW - Good choice. We didn't have a choice. We could fly direct from Belgrade for not very much or via somewhere else in Europe for three times as much. So with BA we are stuck. So pleased you aren't having the hassles.

Victoria - What i don't know about renting out your house isn't worth knowing. And don't even start me on storage places...

Plan B - we are going to be down the road from you - Mum and Dad live in Barnes. Will be back week after next. We MUST meet for a quick coffee. Bring everyone to play on the common with scooters. If they line them up against the wall I'll be first in line to be shouting at them.

Wow, that's going to be different for you. Hadn't realised you were coming back. I hope the flights get sorted for you.
