Christmas Decorations (snigger snigger)

Although Tuzla is a predominantly Muslim city, there are a fair number of Catholic Croats here, so Christmas does feature a bit and the stores have just started to get out their Christmas decorations. I have to admit that I find them a bit random and not totally to my taste. So, you can imagine how excited I was to come across a Christmas set of cookie cutters. 'YES!' I thought to myself 'we can make biscuits and decorations for the tree! Perfect!. Here they are, our new cookie cutters all nicely looped together on a special metal holder, looking good (ps how do you like the view through our kitchen window - full of rain today, but it was snowing yesterday, which would have made a much more Christmassy picture).

Here are the individual cutters. A Christmas tree. Looking fine and most Christmassy.

A shooting star and a moon. Pretty cool.

A bell and a star. I'm liking it, I'm liking it. We can do something with these.

And finally, the last cookie cutter in the Christmas pack which somewhat took me by surprise. After all, I did think that the whole point of Christmas was that there wasn't one of these.

Heh heh heh.

Looking forward to seeing the pictures of the Christmas lights - slightly scared too now!!!

I have just nearly wet myself, my pelvic floor dont think it could cope with a Bosnian Christmas

Naughty naughty Bosnians ha! That's so funny, i think you should make those biscuits as presents for all your female relatives :)

Now come on (er...) it's clearly a mushroom. You know, one of those festive ones. Not truly Christmas without some fungi-shaped cookies. Please don't show me it decorated, you could do a lot of damage with white icing.

Those naughty Bosnians! LOL!

Vic said...

No, I can't see any way that can fit into christmas. But at least you'll have interesting cookies!

Love it! Now we do have to see a pic of your tree festooned with 'festive' shapes!

I have been trying to think of what else it could be supposed to resemble... and I just can't.

Good old Bosnians.

Heh heh heh.

Could it be a toadstool? For the Baby Goblin to sit on?

Dan said...

err...

No, can't think what that's supposed to be either.

Nice redesign by the way.

Metropolitan Mum said...

Heehee. You are so naughty. Oh please do a variation of decorations! We could start a carnival of naughty Christmas cookies.

Teacher Mommy said...

Love it! Too funny. Yeah, can't figure out what it is supposed to be...

well - that's great!

Em, of course it's the baby for the manger! I remember our winter in Tuzla, walking onto the Korzo and seeing Santa and Christmas lights. We mentioned it to a friend at the University, a Muslim, and she said, "But, everyone loves Santa!" That explains it.

Dino said...

Wow Emily, this has sent me straight down memory lane!
I actually remember my mum buying these EXACT same cookie cutters in Mostar before one Christmas and I remember her making the cookie though while I sat there and used them to cut the cookies out. :) I actually still have a set of these exact same ones that we took with us when we came to England.

Also, I never quite looked at the last one in the same way you look at it though, and I don't think I'l be looking at it in such an innocent way again lol!

Dino said...

whoops typo, "though" should say "dough" ^

ninanoclue said...

Oh my god. hahahah that is hilarious! I think you should certainly make some biscuits out of that last one and give as presents, or even hang on the tree!

Athena125 said...

It's a mushroom! And you have a dirty mind... ;-)
Seriously, it IS a mushroom, it's always included in cookie cutter sets that are available around here (Christmas or not). Sorry!

Lady Mama said...

Hahaha. I want one of those cookie cutters!

BL - I have no idea what they will be...

MH - I spent most of Sat afternoon in hysterics for the same reason!

WoB - good idea!

A&U - You were RIGHT! See comments below.

Kat - they are a bit cheeky.

Vic - We already do. I won't talk about the icing, it made me laugh too much. I am a 12 year old boy at heart after all.

Mud - maybe, maybe!

NVG - according the to the Bosnian commenters it is in fact a mushroom. I'd have never known. Adam thinks it is a hammer.

Iota - close indeed.

Dan - thanks.

MM - a carnival of Christmas naughtiness. I like it.

TM - Duh! Its a mushroom. Apparently.I had no idea.

Gaelikka - I do need to grow up a bit, but it did lighten up our cookie making afternoon.

Toni - Looking forward to the lights this year.

Dino - I've read Athena 125's comment so now I know what it is supposed to be. Did you really never think that it might be something a bit more, um, naughty?

Nina - Think I have to. I'm definitely keeping these cookie cutters to become family treasures.

Athena - thanks for enlightening me. Just so I know if it is just me, my countryfolk or what - did you never think that the mushroom looked just like...?

LM - I can buy them and ship them out to interested people. Let me know!

WHAT is that? OMG, I hate to think. Love you new header, BTW.

Ellen said...

Oh that last one is priceless. Just think of the uses, hen party cookies, well done for using the potty cookies, look forward to this evening DH cookies etc... That is the all purpose cookie cutter!

Jean said...

OMG!! You could have some fun with that last cutter couldn't you? Imagine what you could do with the icing bag?

Btw, Love your blog header design...he's good isn't he??

Dino said...

Hi Emily,

Can't say I did! I honestly never thought anything suspicious or "naughty" about that particular shape. Perhaps it's because that cutter is a common shape in B & H and has always been around so people don't think of anything "naughty" when they see it.

But I won't be looking at it in the same way again! lol

Athena125 said...

FM, I grew up with this particular cookie shape... And after (ummm) years, I still only see a mushroom. Must be a force of habit by now.

I've seen more "interesting" "items" on medieval monastery walls.

Dorset Dispatches said...

MM - It is a mushroom. Really. It is. Just not in the hands of the British!

Ellen - LIke the way you are thinking. I think we have the kernel of an idea for a new business here.

Supermum - he is great. Yours looks amazing.

Dino AND Athena125 - oh dear. Yet again demonstrating that i have the sense of humour of a 13 year old boy and also how it was that the British contribution to world comedy is Benny Hill. Those monks though...

Rebel Mother said...

OMG! How I laughed!

What are you going to do with that??

You could hold an Ann Summers party and make cookies from it...
Or go into competition with Ann Summers, making chocolate thingyamees.

So much for the wholesome Christian belief!!!

A right laugh! Love RMxx

and1moremeans5 said...

lol!! that is such a naughty cookie cutter but it might be the shape of a bell (ahem sorry that sounds eveb ruder) xx

I love the last one. Made me laugh out loud!!!

Dorset Dispatches said...

RM, Amy and RS - people people! It is a mushroom. Whatever else were you thinking. So far I've not found a Bosnian who thought it looks smutty and not found a Brit who hasn't. Just wondering what this says about our fine nation? No wonder we spawned Benny Hill, Carry On Films etc etc

of course you will be able to get proper xmas decorations when it gets bloody closer to xmas. Merkator will have loads, at least the one in Sarajevo used to. and the streets will be lined up with xmas / new year decorations vendors. there won't be any mulled wine sold though.

Dorset Dispatches said...

Anon - I'm relying on Merkator all the way. And, I was most surprised to be given mulled wine the other day in a restaurant near Zvornik. It was good too!

b said...

some bars or cafes will do mulled wine for a few weeks during the holidays. don't know how frequently you go to Sarajevo, but check out a place (a bar, a cafe, a pub?) called Ribica (very close to Vjecna Vatra; if walking, turn left after the Benetton shop). but street vendors don't sell it which is a shame as it could look a lot like german xmas markets.

Alice said...

ha ha ... my childish self just laughed out loud at that last picture :-)

Dorset Dispatches said...

b - we were thinking of maybe going this weekend. Will definitely look it out as I LOVE mulled wine.

Alice - you and me both. I have the mind of a 12 year old boy. I will spare you the pictures of the iced biscuits we made this weekend, but they reduced me and my friend to hysterics, much to the boys bemusement!

Loving the new header!!!

I shall have to take some photos of my cookie cutters if you do to a Carnival of naughty christmas cookies... I have some great ones here!

Heh heh heh indeed! I'm looking forward to your pictures of iced biscuits. (Sorry if someone else has already said that.)

chanda said...

HAHAHA....we just saw these at Mercator!! Both Mevludin and I studied the "odd one". He said, "I'm not sure what that is supposed to be!" When I read this on your blog, I laughed so hard. If it is mushroom; how does that tie into Christmas and cookies?? Will we see you at the Library on Tuesday??
